Leicester City star N'Golo Kante was 'close' to signing for West Ham according to manager Slaven Bilic

N'Golo Kante has been key to Leicester City's Premier League title charge
The midfielder has thrived playing in an anchorman's role this season
West Ham boss Slaven Bilic watched Kante play for previous club Caen
Bilic was hugely impressed with the Frenchman's positioning and energy
Kante has been nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award

By Oliver Todd

Leicester City star N'Golo Kante could have signed for West Ham instead, if Slaven Bilic had got his way last summer.

The Foxes midfield dynamo can power his side to within six points of the Barclays Premier League title when the Hammers visit the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

But he could have been lining up in Claret and Blue after Bilic personally watched the £5.6million PFA Player of the Year nominee playing with Caen in France.

It took the Croatian coach just 20 minutes to realise Kante's quality, although at first he was so impressed by the ground the Frenchman covered that he thought there might be twins playing.

Bilic took in a Caen game before he was even confirmed as West Ham manager but he eventually settled for the signings of Alex Song, on loan, and £4.4m Pedro Obiang.

'We were quite close. I watched him in France, in Nice,' Bilic said. 'He was a good player, the same player he is now with Leicester.

'A holding midfielder, not very tall, but he's one of those players that you think after 20 minutes that there are twins, that there are two of them because the energy, the cleverness he plays with. He's always there.

'When you watch a game on television there are players that are always on telly. They are never out of the picture, whatever you see, you see them, he's one of them.

'That's not only an ability involving big lungs or legs or whatever, it's in the head.

'So, he was there but then we got some players before in the same positions and it would simply have been too many players for the same position.'

Kante and Leicester team-mates Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez joined West Ham's Dimitri Payet on the Player of the Year award shortlist this week along with Harry Kane and Mesut Ozil.

Bilic says if the choice was down to him, he wouldn't go with Kante as the No 1 player this season, though.

Hammers playmaker Payet is the obvious pick but when looking at the situation without bias Bilic would plump for 21-goal hitman Vardy.

'I can't be very objective taking about him (Payet),' he said. 'He is there for a reason and I hope he is going to win it.

'If not him, it's an individual award but it has to be connected to the club so if Leicester win the league then it probably should be one of them, and Vardy would be my choice.'

Bermudan teenager Jahkeylo Burgess confirms West Ham trial after miraculous recovery from double leg-break

The forward fractured his leg in December but has already made his comeback.

Mathew Nash

West Ham United, like many teams in England now, have plenty of eyes and ears around the globe and West Ham have found some success in Bermuda recently.

Teenage ‘keeper Nathan Trott joined the club from North Village in Bermuda back in January and is now a fixture in the under-21 squad at West Ham.

West Ham’s young striker Djair Parfitt-Williams is also Bermudan.

Another talented player from the Caribbean nation has also emerged as an option.

Teenager Jahkeylo Burgess has emerged as one of his nation's top young talents and was due to attend trials with West Ham in January.

That unfortunately never happened.

He was playing for his CedarBridge Academy side in December against Berkeley when a challenge from Edry Moore, his cousin, caused a horror double leg-break.

But Burgess has made a miraculously quick recovery from the injury and made his comeback playing for Devonshire Colts this week.

Speaking to the Royal Gazette he went on to confirm that he will be going on trial at West Ham at the start of next year:

“My recovery has kind of caught me by surprise.

“I was a little timid when I came on. I came on in the last five minutes and it felt OK. Everything felt good, but I’m not quite there yet.”

“They [West Ham] told me to come back around the same time next January.”

Burgess still has a long way to go before he can make it at West Ham but he has shown great resilience to recover from a nasty injury in time for the Hammers to still consider him an option.

So remember the name, because Burgess might be yet another Bermudan in the West Ham system in the near future.

West Ham look at Ljajic

West Ham are looking to Roma forward Adem Ljajic, as Inter don’t seem set to pay €11m to buy him permanently.

The Serbia international arrived on loan with option to buy over the summer, but the Nerazzurri’s financial issues mean they will probably return him to Roma.

Sportitalia claim West Ham United have set their sights on the 24-year-old, whose former clubs are Partizan Belgrade and Fiorentina.

This season Ljajic scored four goals in 28 games for Inter, between Serie A and the Coppa Italia, providing three assists.

He has 19 senior caps for Serbia, scoring three goals.
